What Are the " Golden Years?"

Don't go! Don't go! We cry out to youth- and in the wake of its retreating shadow grasp at remnants which may have fallen away in its mad rush to escape. In a frantic race to realize our most lofty and hard - won dreams; we fail to notice that slipping through our unknowing fingers, and sliding past our gold- blinded eyes, is the one thing that makes these dreams worthwhile.
And in that time of reaping, as we gather up the yield of that sown crop and labor, let not the harvest be small, and of little worth, for therein lies the gold of that short time: The realization of our ever emerging quest- the quest for fulfillment and contentment- the winning of that golden cup of victory.

Top-level comments on this article: (4 total)I don't really see it as "slipping through my fingers". I feel like I did 40 years ago, about life. The end will be a surprise. I continue. Most young people just let youth slip through their fingers without appreciating it, until it's gone- that was the message. Youth is wasted on the young.- Thanks for reading- Always- Ella
Yes, "youth is wasted on the young," but I also heard once that "wisdom is wasted on the old." By the time we understand anything we're too complacent to make a difference. All I know is it will never change. Young people do what they do because they are young and it all feels right and good at the time. That cycle will never be broken. Then again, why should we question the nature behind it. Maybe it's best that we just accept it, and "Whisper words of wisdom: Let it be."KennyThe gist of the article is that young people should appreciate their youth while they have it- as it flies away too soon."It will never change." "The cycle will never be broken."Nothing would ever change, no cycle would ever be broken, if not for the desire for improvement and evolution of the human race.If we just accepted nature, and questioned nothing, we would still be dragging our knuckles on the ground and cracking coconuts on a rock.
When my parents were in their 80s they used to say that the Golden Years weren't all they were cracked up to be... I heard that again from several agins aunts and uncles....I guess it beats the alternative... Marijo
This is a beautifully worded, sympathetic piece of writing.I offer a note of reassurance, however; when you return to the spirit world your appearance takes on that which was yours when you were in your physical prime-usually late 20s or early 30s.I shall be truly skinny again.
