To Speak of Love

How long I have known you;
Your nearness always there,
Spun ‘round with murky mists of time;
Enclosed within despair.
The heart reveals the awe-full presence
And bids the mind in furtive whispers;
Speak love's unknown name.
Falling drop by drop upon this arid plain,
This love brings heart's fulfilled sweet joys;
Yet with that joy brings pain.
And in the night the heart does quake,
And call our restless mind to wake
And know the wisdom of this place;
That touches light upon God's face.
For in this flesh we cannot hold,
Perfection in love's quest;
But by God's grace perchance to see
The realm of heaven's blessed.
Dare we tempt the envy
Of the gods who dealt our hand,
And wrest from them what was denied-
For us, not ere was planned?
Yet by the God our soul was wrought,
And given of this light;
We find our way by love's true path,
Through earth's enduring night.
