My Ideas on the Philosopher's Stone

by Ella Camp

Time is the sentinel that guards the gate to the philosopher's stone; it is the end-to-end all ends, and to possess it we have need to conquer that sentinel.

Since the philosopher's stone offers all human values: wealth, spiritual renewal, happiness, longevity, health, etc, it is the ultimate end-in-itself of all our human desires, and we will never possess it. To do so would require that we subdue and control time; and thereby overcome and escape death.

Although some of us may eventually achieve most of the purportedly desired ends by one means or another, we can never achieve them all collectively in one lifetime; we simply don't have time. The main end we can never fully achieve is health. We may prolong it, but never to a permanent degree- ultimately it gives way to death.

Health is probably the most highly desired of all the values, i e, the saying, "You may have lost everything, but you still have your health." What lasting value can any of the other ends have if we lose the only one that makes them all worth having? Lasting health may be the only desired value which can prevent us from ever obtaining the philosopher's stone.

Do we continually return to life on earth seeking all the ends we never achieved? For most of us, that will take an eternity.... wait a minute, eternity is never-ending life; a conquering of death. Is life itself the philosopher's stone? Have we had it in the palm of our hand all along, covered by the glove of ignorance? Can we relax a little now, knowing we're not just chasing a rainbow, that we're already in the race, so to speak, and that when and if we claim the prize is strictly up to us? All we need do is keep running, stopping along the way of course, to gather our forces, assess our progress so far and even smell the roses; after all, eternity is endless, and we have it all. But wait what means will we use to achieve the value of a firm, unshakable belief in eternity?

Great article Ella. Maybe all we have to do is stand still. Perhaps at the end of experiencing and through the door of emptiness comes that which is greater.

Thoughtful and profound, as always, Ella. I love your perspective, I could feel myself letting go of my panic. There's so much heavy-handed judgmentalism "if we don't get it right we're doomed; this is our last chance" - I absolutely hate it. I love your article, thanks, it's a wonderful affirmation of life.

Thanks Jenn- you know how much I value and enjoy your comments- You know what- I downloaded audacity and the Lame mp3 encoder both- then I recorded this article- well everything seemed to go alright, but for some reason it wouldn't upload! I fooled with it for 2 hours, but got a tired headache and finally quit- Don't have time to mess with it anymore tonight- I'll be leaving Tuesday- already had to postpone my trip once because family stuff- don't want to do it again. I'll check-in while I'm at my seesters house LOL- Maybe I'll try the audio thing again when I get back- See Ya- Always- Ella

Ahhh- you're such a nice feller- Thanks so much for reading this- it was just one of my philosophical ramblings- I have them all the time, but don't always write them down. See ya later guy...........As I told Jenn- I recorded a narration of this article, mostly because it was short- but I couldn't get it to upload- Oh well- I'll try again later.....Always- Ella- probably a good thing- I was half asleep when I made it-

I agree with Fran, I believe that surrendering control of our lives to God frees us for contentment here on Earth. Your concepts of life and death are different than mine but I still find them interesting.

Thank you Linda- yes- everyone has their own conclusions about life and death and everything in between, but diversity is good- so is diversity in reading- don't you think? I've read a ton of things that I didn't exactly approve of or go along with, but I wanted to know about them just the same.... Thanks for reading Linda- and do come again- I always enjoy your input- Always- Ella

Thought provoking article, so much so you have reminded me how far away from myself I was a year ago? Prompted me to think about December 2012, only God knows why, ;) the different ramifications for believers and non believers, now you got me thinking, can't wait to come back. Thank you.
